Commercial Invoice

A commercial invoice is the primary document that states the value, quantity, and terms of an international sale — used by customs to assess duty. It is issued by the exporter (seller) to the importer (buyer) and is mandatory for cross-border shipments.

Packing List

A packing list is a shipping document that itemises exactly how a consignment is packed — the contents, quantity, weight, and dimensions of each package. It supports customs examination and helps the carrier and importer verify the shipment.

Bill of Lading

A bill of lading (B/L) is the transport document issued by a carrier for ocean cargo. It serves three roles: a receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage, and a document of title that can be used to claim the cargo.

Proforma Invoice

A proforma invoice is a preliminary invoice an exporter sends to a buyer before the sale is finalised. It sets out the goods, estimated price, and terms — used for quotations, arranging advance payment, and obtaining import permits or letters of credit.

Shipping Bill

A shipping bill is the primary document filed with Indian customs to obtain clearance for goods leaving the country. It is mandatory for all exports from India and is generated through the customs EDI system (ICEGATE) by the exporter or their customs broker.

Certificate of Origin

A certificate of origin (COO) certifies the country in which goods were manufactured. Importers use it to claim preferential (reduced) duty under trade agreements and to satisfy import regulations. In India it is issued by authorised chambers and agencies.

Air Waybill

An air waybill (AWB) is the transport document for air cargo. It is a non-negotiable receipt issued by the airline or its agent that serves as the contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier — but unlike a bill of lading, it is not a document of title.
